Now that the underclassmen have declared, we are at Part Deux.

    1) No change here, DT Vita Vea
    2) DE Rasheem Green, 1st team Pac 12 coaches, second in Pac 12 with 10 sacks.
    3) RB Rashaad Penny he's been my guy and his return skills make him too valuable to roll the dice on waiting and hoping he's there in the 4th.
    4) WR Allen Lazard 1st team All Big 12 coaches 6'4" 222 uses his body for separation and comes down with the ball.
    5) LB Javon Roland-Jones Sun Belt Player of the Year
    7) LB Joel Lanning, not a secret anymore. He had 4 tackles and a sack, RAN for a 2 yard TD playing QB and also ran for a late first down to seal the bowl game victory over Memphis AT Memphis in the "Liberty Bowl", 21-20. We NEED a "short yardage" guy. Guess what, it doesn't need to be a RB, Lanning played QB up until this year and played downs in almost every game as a running QB while playing MLB every snap and coverage team. He was also 2nd team Big 12 LB playing college LB for the first time in his life. GREAT instincts.

I would be happy with that draft but I doubt Vea makes it to 20.

DL with the first two picks and a RB in the mid rounds, even the WR in the mid rounds is acceptable since Tate and Marvin Jones wont last forever.

I have a feeling the Lions trade up back into the last part of the 1st for a rb.

If Rashaad Penny runs a 4.5 40-yard dash, he will be drafted in the 1st round. I believe he will run a 4.5. PFF ranked him as the second most elusive RB in college football for the 2017 season behind Bryce Love. Based on film, he is a natural pass catcher with good hands bringing the ball into his body. IOW he is a complete 3 down back. His game speed is excellent, outrunning DB angles, and will leave them in a foot race, by at least a step, in the open field. He is a big back at 5' 11" and 220 lbs that can run with power through a tackler or can shift gears using small back quickness and lateral agility to leave the tackler grasping air. Several prominent NFL Scouting services have ranked him with Saquon Barkley as the two best Return Specialist in college football for 2017.

Had 5 consecutive 200 yard games (including bowl game) to end his 2017 season. Most notable game this season is his performance against the 20th rank Stanford Cardinals with 175 yards. San Diego St. upset the Cardinals during that game.

From what I see on film, Rashaad Penny is the 2nd best RB in this draft class and this is an excellent RB draft class. Dane, he won't be there in the 3rd round.

Uh Geezer, you didn't have any idea who the guy was before I posted my first draft nor did most people. And you have 6 RB's going in the first?

Kamara, Hunt, Foreman and Conner all went in the 3rd last year and the 5 year average is 8 in the top 100.

Here's your problem, match the player with the team. Teams have bigger needs and it's a deep class of RB's. Last year Dalvin Cook didn't go until the 2nd and he was Florida States all team leading rusher when he left AS A JUNIOR. Do you rate Penny over Cook? Not a chance. I have Penny ranked as the 8th best RB in the draft which means he should still be there when we pick in the 3rd.

Hey are you still mad about me giving my opinion about your boy?

To answer the question of rating Penny over Cook. Yeah I think I would especially if Penny has the same long speed. Cook coming out last year had injury and off the field issues that caused him to fall out of the first round. Penny however is a clean machine (injury and off field), built a lot more durable, and has better hands.

I am basing estimation of Penny's long speed on opposing DBs, especially the game against Stanford. In that game he went up against two DBs that will be in the NFL in 2018. A kid named Quentin Meeks (Son of Ron Meeks) and Justin Reid (Brother of Eric Reid). Both of these kids should run around a 4.5 and was able to catch him by using good angle on a couple of plays. Penny's longest run was 38 yards.
I also think this game will be indicative of how Penny will play in the NFL. His OL had a very tough time handling the DL of Stanford. I don't know how many times Penny had to beat people in the backfield to end up gaining 3 to 5 yards on most plays. Kind sounds like the Lions OL, huh, so he will fit right in. LOL

The only wart in Penny's play, as posted by some scouting sites, may be pass blocking. Out of all the film available I haven't even seen him try to pass block. I mean why would you have him pass block when he should be running a route to get the ball in his hands. Physically the kid can take on anybody, so if he wants to pass block he should be able to.

BTW there are 6 to 7 teams that need RBs in this next draft. Cleveland, Indianapolis, NY Giants, NY Jets, Tampa Bay, Miami, and Baltimore. All of these teams pick before the Lions and I have not included the playoff teams looking to augment their stable of backs. Several scouting sites are reporting at least 6 backs will be taken in the top 50 picks.

P.S. I also want to add, the difference between Guice, Penny, and Michel is basically a coin toss. I would take any of them, but I still believe it will have to be in the 1st round to get one of them.

I could see 3 backs going in 1st, be surprised if it’s more than that. Think you’ll see the big run on them between Lions 2nd and 3rd rounder.
  10. Liongeezer Ornery Old Fart

Agreed. I believe Barkley (Browns or Jets) and Guice (Ozzie Newsome Pick, he luvs tough guys) will be off the board before the Lions pick at 20. One other back could possible be selected by the playoff teams (Steelers maybe or even the Patriots). But, I believe the teams listed above that did not select a RBs in the first, will at the top of the second round, where Penny or Michel, Johnson and Jones should go.
  11. TheDane Well-Known Member

Just like we passed in the first and second last year? And the third and fourth, and, and... We need a RB worse than all of those teams and Walters has us taking one in the third, the third round. And Wadley would be the wrong choice BTW. In their draft Penny is the 11th RB taken and doesn't go until after the 4th round. GBN has him at #13.
  12. Liongeezer Ornery Old Fart

I sometimes wonder about Walters. It seems like teams use his site to disseminate misinformation. I remember reading one AFC GMs comments about Jarrad Davis, he said "Sure go ahead and tear him down. Maybe somebody will believe you and we will take him."

Ourlads Scouting and Draftwire has Penny as their number 3 back. The Huddle Report has not updated their top 100 since Dec 11, 2017. They are usually pretty reliable as for rankings and who will be drafted in the top 50 and top 100 so I am going to keep watching them.

This is when Pumphrey was still there, pay attention to his kick returns.

  16. Liongeezer Ornery Old Fart

I know. He killed Arizona St this year with kick returns too. He is fast
  17. TheDane Well-Known Member

And this is really why I want Penny, his special teams play. With Agnew and Penny we have depth and top notch return guys. Punter and kicker are solid, win the special teams game and you win plenty.
  18. Honolulublue4life Fan for life

Watched Penny highlights on youtube. Looked pretty good.
  19. Liongeezer Ornery Old Fart

    I have watched them all.

Saquon Barkley - he is a OMG RB. enough said. Not bad for the Big Slow.

Guice 5' 11' 220 lbs. is a freight train and runs almost reckless as far as initiating contact. Pure tough guy that punishes a defense for trying to tackle him. Has a little of Leonard Fournette in him.

Penny 5' 11' 225 lbs. runs with power and then will use small back finesse that overwhelms a tackler. He has the best hands and good change of pace. Has extra gear when he gets to the open field.

Sony Michel is a 5' 11" 220 pound scat back and has unbelievable lateral agility and game speed. Excellent Balance and acceleration, Good hands, luv this kid. He was on display big time during the College Championships where he blew it up.

Kerryon Johnson 6' 215 lbs. is a long strider, and reminds me of Marcus Allen with his blend of speed and acceleration. This guy can do it all. Hands, block, power and finesse. He is the reason Alabama and Georgia (both filled with NFL talent) lost at least one game this year.

Ronald Jones II has the best long speed of all these backs. Reminds me of Reggie Bush only faster (Bush ran a 4.5 forty, Jones should run a 4.4 forty). Good hands, but is light at 6 ' 190 pounds. Will have to be used as a change of pace back to minimize hits at first. As he gets older and able to put on muscle without restricting his speed. He can become a premier back in the league.

P.S. This is a pick your poison, RB class. Long Speed, Power, Quickness, Acceleration.

As optimistic as I am about the draft class, I keep going back to this...
“We feel good about Zach (Zenner). We feel good about Dwyane (Washington), feel good about Mike James,” Quinn said back in April 2017.

Only a dumb fuck would say that after watching those guys play in 2016.

I have stated the running game was poor due to scheme. Others have stated, it is the running backs. Even though several websites indicated that the run blocking by the Oline was graded the worst in the NFL, but I digress.

I am convinced that there will be a new back or two next season with an entire new scheme, so claiming one to be right on either front will be frivolous.
  22. millenbacker !! JUST BREW IT !!

I'd bring back Ngata and tradevup to get Vea.
  23. millenbacker !! JUST BREW IT !!

Well he's not going to throw players under the bus and hurt any potential trade value so if you take everything he says serious that's your problem.
  24. TheDane Well-Known Member

Okay, we have a dumb fuck here that wants to play. Hey dumb fuck, "trade value"? LOL, TRADE VALUE???? How in THE fuck do you trade guys that aren't NFL RB's AND are sure to be cut EVENTUALLY anyway?
  25. Blaming Barry Well-Known Member

Yeah I agree it has nothing to do with trade value (no need for name calling though), but the GM also isn't gonna throw his players under a bus. We'll find out how he really feels about his stable of RBs after free agency/draft.
