Who do you take at pick 20?

"Special Projects." That's what Quinn calls 'em.

Pasqualoni is gonna be the DC.

I just can't/don't see the Lions drafting a RB in the first round. Since 2000 the Patroits have drafted a RB once 2006 Laurence Maroney.

I have seen a few new mocks having us take a rb at 20. The only RB's worth taking at 20 is Guice or Ronald Jones, Guice is a back that can handle 3 downs, Jones probably not. Another thing can Guice have a long career, or will he be injury prone like Fournette? The other RB are reaches. I really wish we had a top pick, Barkley is an elite rb. If we are gonna reach for a RB it's either Michel or Penny.
  6. Liongeezer Ornery Old Fart

I don't think Penny or Michel at 20 is a reach. With either one we will have a two dimensional offense most teams will not be able to stop, and only the best teams can slow down.

Call me crazy but I don't think RBs go in the first other than Barkley and maybe Michel. Go DL with the first pick, best available. Pick up runner in 2-3.
  8. badnews3123 Well-Known Member

Think Guice will be second back taken.
  9. TheDane Well-Known Member

In a "normal" year, 8 RB's are taken in the top 100, basically the first 3 rounds. I wouldn't be surprised if they take 9 or 10 AND I also believe Guice is the second RB taken AND in the first.
  10. Blaming Barry Well-Known Member

Guice will almost definitely be the 2nd RB taken. Penny is the wild card because from what I've seen he basically has a 3rd round grade but I have a feeling a team or 2 will covet him and reach.

I will be a little surprised if 6 RBs get taken before the Lions' 2nd pick (but not shocked).

Alright for pick #20, pre-combine meaning provided they don't fuck it up between now and then ...

I think we got some real road-graders at Guard. Guys who could really help the run game. Quenton Nelson, no way is he available. But one can dream. He would be a truly dominating type guard the way Steve Hutchinson was all those years. At the next level, there's a dropoff. But still Billy Price. Total road-grader. And that guy Todd McShay mocked to us. Isaiah Wynn. Sky's the limit for him, he's got so many great tools to work with. Real good pass-blocker with flashes of being good to fucking great as a run-blocker. Total package.

I'd go with either of those guards in the order mentioned. Round one.

And if all of them are gone, which I doubt, I'd go with Taven Bryan or Maurice Hurst. But they might be gone. Fuck it, someone out of that bunch will be there.

In round 2 or 3 I like Trenton Thompson, DT. With the right coaching, he could be dominant.

I once watched a play where he was effectively tied up by his blocker. So he reaches his hand around the blocker and he tackles the ball carrier with his one gorilla arm. And it wasn't so much that he dragged the guy down, as he just kind of "batted" him down. Like he was swatting a fly.

He's a unique talent and I like him as much as the more highly-touted guys like Bryant or Hurst. Could be the steal of the draft. So might as well get a guard in round 1 if you think Thomson will be there in round 2. Have yourself 2 first-round talents.

Don’t think he makes it to 20, but Derwin James would be a great addition to D. A guy you can move all over the D and would be huge help on the covering TE issues, Lions have had past couple years.

Good player, very comparable to MIles Killebrew, slightly more talented. Hopefully, Killebrew gets more opportunities and better coaching since Austin is gone.

    Slightly?
  17. Rusty Hilger VP, Wrist Cutter's Club

Haha! Great player, but man, I think it's our front 7 that needs the most work.

The bonus with him is I think you can move him around so much, including LB in situations. He gives you a ton of versatility. FSU has him rush off the edge at times.

Like I said, don’t see him making it to 20.
  20. badnews3123 Well-Known Member

Quick count, but looks like they’ve drafted as many WR’s and TE’s as OL.
  21. Liongeezer Ornery Old Fart

Yup, same size and speed. In my book, Killebrew was 2nd round talent we got in the 4th round. I compare Killebrew to Deone Buchanan.
  22. Rusty Hilger VP, Wrist Cutter's Club

We really needed both he and A'Shawn to take that next step up in their sophomore seasons.

And they were both kind of a disappointment.

Either way, Quinn knows that A'Shawn is the most important player on the entire team. If he takes the next step up, the Lions take the next step up. That's why they hired his college position coach.
  23. badnews3123 Well-Known Member

James hasn’t even tested yet and you see just talking size/athleticism, not football ability. Something that is still a question with Killebrew who struggled majorly this year.
  24. Vic Turner Just Sayin

Not in the early rounds, that's dominated by defense
  25. badnews3123 Well-Known Member

    3 QB’s, 3 WR’s, 2 RB’s, and a TE on 1st 2 days of draft. Not accounting for 2 1st round TE’s in the couple years before that and a 1st round RB.

Also not sure why you cut it off at ‘09. Belichick has been there twice that time.

Also that Pats model is a poor one to follow. There’s a lot of missed picks in those drafts, but it’s covered up by having one of the greatest QB’s(who has always taken team friendly deals for most part)and coaches of all time.
